Shakeology and the 80/20 Rule

Although it sounds statistical, and I HATE math, the 80/20 rule works on so many levels!  In a nut shell the assumption is that most of the results in any situation are determined by a small number of causes.  Or, 80% of your outcomes come from 20% of your inputs.  So, when applied to diet, keep your nutrition on point 80% of the time.  Do what you will, within reason the other 20%, but remember, those small number of causes?  They'll determine a lot.  In life, 20% of your activities can determine 80% of your happiness.  In business, 20% of your workers can determine 80% of your outputs.

So, Live and 80/20 Life:
How?  Start small, think big.  You probably spend 80% of your time at work and are tired and spend the majority of the rest sleeping, chillaxin', whatever.  Take a percentage of the remaining 20% and spend it on something you LOVE to do.  For most people it's a creative outlet; music, art, writing.  For others, it's activities or athletics.  Whatever it is, make the most of it!  Don't procrastinate, do it now.

Some people never get the work-life balance they want.  Why?  They start to late. They sleep WAY too much.  They pour their 20% into alcohol...literally.  Alcohol is a depressant, then they feel even more unhappy.  I indulge in a glass of wine sometimes.  I like it.  It just doesn't like me so much.  I end up with heartburn and a headache if I indulge too much, so I tend to not drink so much.  Jack Daniels and I used to be great friends....then somewhere between a job, two kids, building a house... I found a good work-life balance. It takes losing sight of material objects and focusing on what really makes you happy.  So, do some soul searching and find your niche.  Passions are WAY more fun the Possessions.  Making your passion your profession is often the first step.  It takes out some of the grind feeling when you really, truly LOVE your Job.

80/20 Nutrition:
I've been working on this theory along with workouts and lifestyle.  I find, I feel WAAAY better if I eat better.  So, I try and eat really nutritional 4/5 meals and 4/5 snacks, separate the two.  That 1/5 meal or snack that's not-so-nutritionally sound is where I splurge.  And, I always try to follow up that splurge with Shakeology.  It's almost like it scrubs the crap out on it's way down!

Example:
Breakfast: Shakeology
AM Snack: apple
Lunch: Sandwich with cottage cheese and tomatoes
PM Snack: granola bar
Dinner: Hamburger

Breakfast: Shakeology
AM Snack: Banana
Lunch: Loaded Salad & Smoothie
PM Snack: Mango
Dinner: Chicken Sandwich with baked sweet potato

Breakfast:1 egg + 1 egg white, scrambled, milk and yogurt with granola
AM Snack: Cookie
Lunch: Shakeology
PM Snack: Trail Mix and Extra M&Ms
Dinner: Shakeology

Keeping a food diary helps, you can see when you put what in your body, identify cravings and times you crave things (including times of the month), and calculate nutritional value.  Add activities to your journal and you'll get a pretty good picture of your life, food habits and lifestyle.

Tooth Health: The Entrance To Your Body

At the entrance of your body is your mouth and your TEETH.  If what you're putting in your body is destroying your teeth, what do you think it's doing to the rest of your body?!

This is a great article about drinks and your teeth.  I'd like to take this a bit farther and say that your teeth show wear and tear that your intestines, liver, kidneys, stomach & colon all see too.  Energy and Sports Drinks and Your Teeth by The Chicago Tribune

My Dental Hygienist has this table of drinks in her office:

How To Minimize The Damage

  • Swishing your mouth out with water after drinking these beverages can help decrease the amount of acid contacting the teeth
  • Chewing sugar-free gum or anything with xylitol will also help minimize the damage
  • Drink sugary and acidic beverages with meals, and never before bedtime unless you plan to brush your teeth before sleeping
  • Using a straw also helps decrease contact of these drinks with the teeth
  • Other drinks that contribute to tooth decay: Milk, wine, beer, tea, coffee, and fruit juices
  • Drink more water!
NOBODY wants teeth that look like this.
Trident offers sugar-free gum with Xylitol in Spearment, Wintergreen, bubblegum and some other fruity flavors, you can find it on Amazon or Soap.com.  There's also a Xylitol gum, I haven't tried it though, so I can't recommend it for flavor.

Tooth health is important to your body, so with regular dental check-ups and maintenance with brushing and flossing, you shouldn't run into problems.  If you're experiencing negative tooth health, the rest of your body is probably paying for the sugar and acid intake too!  One more reason to not eat CRAP!

Have you looked at the chemicals that you put in your body?
Daily poisons that bring about acidity: Read the labels on the processed foods we eat. aspartame, phosphorus (as in soda), caffeine (binds up calcium so it can't be used in the body). They and others create an acidic state in body.

Look at what your using and see how many products contain any of these chemicals (there are more but below are the most prevalent)):

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate - known to be carcinogenic - found in toothpaste, shampoo... etc. etc.

Cocaminde DEA - know to be carcinogenic to animals - found in even the "natural" soap powders because its made from coconuts??,

Propylene Glycol - this is in antifreeze - implicated with contact dermatitis, etc.

Phenol - coal tar, causes nausea, convulsions, coma, etc.

Iodopropynl Butyl Carbamate - adversely affects liver, etc.

Organophosphate is an insecticide actually used to kill spider mites from agricultural fields. Farmers, their families and pets are warned to stay out of a sprayed field for a minimum of forty-eight hours. So why is this vigorous insecticide in our laundry powder?

Blue #1, Yellow #5, and Red #40 - all coal tar derivatives.

How do we get these chemicals into our system? - we brush our teeth with them, wash our face with them, they are found in our deodorants, hairspray, perfumes, makeup and cleansers, moisturizers, etc. etc.

Even common soap is made from cattle and pigs (animal fats). The antibiotics, hormones etc.. that are in the animal systems are then transferred into your body system. In addition, your skin also can get plugged up using these animal fats and cannot get rid of wastes through this system of detoxification - the skin.

The products with chemicals in them are very easily assimilated into the person using them. Deodorant's chemicals are very easily to absorb into the lymphatic passages and to your body's systems. Aluminum can get into the brain since it can pass the blood brain barrier - and aluminum products researchers say may cause Alzheimer's. The more "natural" deodorants have propylene glycol in them and that is a petroleum product found in many products including makeup.

Here's a look at the acid levels of what you eat from Ripped Club

And, here's a great Alkaline Diet to follow!

What are the dangers of an over-acidic body?

You're probably are aware that the body only functions well in a very narrow range of body temperature. A body temperature of 98.6 degrees is normal. If it goes lower, you don't feel so good, if it goes even a couple of tenths of a degree higher, you don't feel well. Three or four degrees higher might bring about convulsions and death.

Well, the body also has another small range in which it can operate and that is it's pH. The optimum pH for the body fluids is 7.0

The Japanese feel that the degenerative diseases as osteoporosis, cancers, arthritis, etc. are primarily due to acidosis (the system being too acid).

Based on testimonials, conditions, ranging from dandruff and fungus under the toe to diabetes and cancer have lessened or in some cases gone into full remission simply by achieving a proper acid/base balance.

When a body is acidic, it creates a welcoming environment for viruses and bacteria to come in and begin to flourish. As viruses and bacteria continue to flourish inside our body, we experience lack of energy, frequent illness and pains. If a person doesn't do anything about changing the acidic state of the body, the situation can get worse. Virus or bacteria can mutate into a serious illness.

Conversely, bacteria and viruses perish in alkaline environment, because a pH balanced, or alkaline body doesn’t create the environment for viruses and bacteria to thrive and flourish. Thus, no bacteria or virus will enter an alkaline body, grow and mutate into serious illness or disease.
Even just a mild acidosis in your body can cause problems such as:

·
Heart damage and cardiovascular disease, including reduced oxygen levels and the constriction of blood vessels.
· Diabetes, weight gain and even obesity.
· Kidney stones and bladder infections.
· An under-active immune system.
· Free radical damage, and possible cancerous mutations.
· Irregular hormone activity. · Causes the body to age prematurely.
· Weak bones and osteoporosis.
· Muscle ache and joint pain from acid build up.
· Fatigue and chronic tiredness.
· Digestion problems and constipation.
· Chronic yeast infections.

Shakeology

The first cup is Chocolate, but center & left are GREENBERRY!  They're not so green when you add frozen fruit, yogurt & juice!  My husband, Royce, and I have Shakeology every morning for breakfast.  Royce loves Greenberry and my choice is Chocolate.  I switch it up sometimes though with a Tropical Strawberry or Greenberry.  I like them all! Supplements: The Top 10

  • Multivitamins
  • Meal Replacements
  • Sports Nutrition Supplements
  • Calcium
  • B Vitamins
  • Vitamin C
  • Glucosamine & Chondroiton
  • Homeopathic Medicines
  • Vitamin D
  • Weight Loss Pills
With all the supplements out there, these rank among the top 10.  I can honestly say I've taken most of them at one time or another in my life. It's important to remember that dietary supplements are designed to supplement your diet, not to replace nutritious foods.  My rule of thumb is to thoroughly research a supplement before I take it.

What do I take?  Well, here's my daily cocktail....
Spironolactone, an androgen blocker prescribed to me by my OB/GYN.
Norethindrone, another one prescribed to me by my OB/GYN for endometriosis.
Glucosamine Chondroiton, for knee pain .  I take it sporadically when I feel I need to and when I'm doing workouts or activities that are hard on my knees.  I used to take it daily when Royce and I lived in Colorado and we snow skied A LOT!
Multivitamin, Women's One A Day.
Acid Reducer for heart burn as needed.
Raspberry Ketone for fat loss.
Shakeology as a meal replacement and overall nutritional supplement.
Whey Protein to enhance results and recovery of muscles after strenuous workouts.

I meet 5 of the top 10 plus my daily other drugs.  Do they work?  Mostly from what I can tell.  Raspberry Ketone alone or Shakeology alone aren't miracles for weight loss.  Paired and combined with a nice exercise program and good nutrition they are wonderful and I see great results.  6 weeks in, I have less cravings, increased weight loss, AMAZING fat loss and I can't pinpoint one factor or another.  It's a daily cocktail of drugs, exercise and nutrition that's leading to success.  I've tried one without the others with little results.  But, combined I can't believe how effortless it seems.

I got some Raspberry Ketones before I started Shakeology and my BeachBody workouts.  They didn't do much.  However, my recent study of Shakeology with Raspberry Ketones along with 3-4 workouts a week was more effective than any one or combination of 2 out of 3 together.  Combined, it's a trifecta of fat blasting!

What Doctors Say About Shakeology

I can't stress enough how amazing Shakeology is.  After watching this, I realized my heartburn has gotten exponentially better since starting Shakeology 2 weeks ago.  It's something I've been working on getting rid of by healing my stomach for close to a year.  After having my kids, my esophagus and stomach were scorched from stomach acid.  I did a course of 6-7 courses of Prevacid 8 weeks of Dexilant and didn't have the results I've had in two weeks with Shakeology.  I ate salsa for the first time in 3 years last night and had a glass of wine with no heartburn!  I'm not going to say it's a miracle cure, but I feel better in many ways.  And, Shakeology is a WHOLE LOT cheaper than Dexilant!  Give it a week, what do you have to loose?  Next on my list to enjoy....garlic!

ViSalus vs. Shakeology

So, I've been asked a few times about Vi vs Shakeology.  Lets take a look:

 Nutrition:

Body by Vi
% DV
Shakeology
% DV
Calories 90   140
Calories from fat 10 10 3
Total fat 1 2 .05 g 0
Saturated fat 0 0 0 0
Trans fat 0 0 0 0
Cholesterol 15 mg 5 10 mg 3
Sodium 75 mg 3 95 4
Potassium 125 mg 4
?*

Total carbs 7 g 2 19 g 6
Dietary fiber 5 22 3 g 13
Sugars 1 g   11 g
Protein 12 g 24 15 g 30

I, myself, have been wondering a little about Potassium in the Shakeology, so I took a deeper look.  Here's what BeachBody has to say about Potassium in Shakeology:

"The potassium levels are almost in the exact ratios they should be with sodium being about 190mg of K and 95mg of Na. This creates regulatory and proper exchange of active transport system of these too elements."

Shakeology has probiotics, prebiotics, antioxidants, phytonutirnts and digestive enzymes.  I can't say so much for Vi.

Cost: Lets take a look.  What's really cheaper?

Shakeology
Vi Shape
$119 per month $49 per month (Vi Shape only)
$1428 per year $588 per year (Vi Shape only)

So, when you just look at the shake, Vi is cheaper, but the suggested supplements you additionally have to take (if you so choose so) would make it WAY more expensive than Shakeology, which already has the good stuff you'd be supplementing with Vi.

Other types of popular meal replacements:
  • SlimFast: drink 2 shakes and eat a sensible dinner
  • Special K diet: eat 2 bowls of cereal and eat a sensible meal
  • Right Size: replace 2 meals with two shakes
They all work in their own way.  It's not about what you do, it's about simply doing it.  Finding what's right for your exercise and nutrition regimen is up to you (or your personal trainer if you're lucky enough to have one).  Don't get discouraged.  If you do get discouraged, talk to someone about it.  Utilize your resources with trainers, coaches, dietitians and nutritionists.  It's a puzzle you have to make fit you.

P90X: YogaX Day 4

I'm 4 days in and already I have results, -5 lbs.  Not too shabby!  I find it easiest to get my workout in first thing in the morning, however the last 2 days I've had to put it off until Dalton's naptime (about 9am).  I welcomed YogaX this morning with open arms and I really enjoyed it.  It's a whole lot of sun salutations, which I love.  I feel less sore today.  I'm motivated to push on in the program.  Yesterday I wasn't so open minded, but the money well spent was hanging on in the back of my brain telling me I'd better see this one through.  I decided not to post yesterday because I didn't have much that was positive to say!

I'm finding it hard to eat the recommended caloric intake in the nutritional guide.  I'm full all day long and drink lots of water.  Yesterday I skipped a snack and was STARVING by supper.  So, I scarfed down a salad and settled into some water.  I did eat two bananas before bed, mainly because my legs have been cramping at night since starting P90X.

I'm loving the Shakeology for Breakfast, although you can substitute it for any meal. I find the chocolate a little rich for me, so adding coffee to it makes it PERFECT!  Now, I don't do a full scoop per cup by any means.  I've been doing 16 oz coffee, 1/2 scoop of Shakeology Chocolate and adding a Tbsp of PeanutButter to mix things up a little.  I drink 2 cups, and I have my Shakeology in!  One day on my second cup I blended in a cup of ice, yum!  Yes, you need to blend it in the blender or it will be kind gritty and you may feel the need to chew it.

Blenders:  If you don't have a blender, I suggest the Magic Bullet or the Ninja.  I used to have a Magic Bullet, it lasted 5 years, it broke and I got the Ninja.  Now, the Ninja isn't as convenient and handy, but I do like it!  So, if you're not going to see yourself using the Ninja much or you're single or you may be having a baby soon, I highly suggest the Magic Bullet!  My Magic Bullet went through heavy use!  It lasted 5 years of hard use from margaritas and soups to baby food and smoothies.  LOTS of ice went through that baby!  I'm done making baby food, so I figured it's time for the Ninja and I like it.  I don't like that stuff sometimes gets stuck in the corners, but overall it's great.  It has 2 blender sizes and is great for margaritas!

Overall, I feel great and accomplished for taking this on and challenging myself for the first time in years on something that's all about me.

P90X Day 1: Feel the Burn

Nothing like a good workout or fresh ink to make you hurt so good.  This morning, in my case, it was a good workout!

Day 1: P90X: Chest & Back and Ab Ripper X
OK, so someone put the wrong DVD in my set.  I'm a little PISSED OFF!  My arms and shoulders hurt.  So, since, I couldn't do Ab Ripper X that I purchased, I got the YouTube version and went back to the Fitness Guide to see if I got all the exercises.  So I think I'll keep using that until I get the correct DVD.  I used resistance bands instead of weights and pull-ups for Chest & Back.  I would say it was a tough, perfect, sweat drenching, challenging workout.  It's been years since I've sweat like that.  I did break my resistance bands, so I'll be investing in a new set today.  I need to hit up Target anyway!

Day 1: Shakeology: Chocolate
I blended with a cup of berries (blueberries, blackberries and raspberries), half a banana, blueberry soy yogurt and a little milk.  It's really rich.  I can't taste any of the fruit, so that was kind of a waste of my fruit for the day!  It was so thick I couldn't hardly get it through my straw (thanks to the berries).  I stuck 1/2 in the fridge for later and decided to try another recipe.  16 oz of hot coffee and 1/2 scoop of Shakeology Chocolate.  Perfection.  I think I'll be making a coffee variety of the chocolate for the rest of the month!

Nutrition:
I planned out the day with water and meals for the rest of the day before bed last night.  We'll see how this goes, I'm not sure I can fit all this food in per calculations on what I should be eating, but I'm going to give it a shot.

Meal Replacement Shakes

As a BeachBody Coach, I hate to report this, but I'm not going to lead you astray.  The rankings are in:

10 LaBrada Lean Body
9 MetaboLife Slender Satisfaction
8 MonaVie Shakes
7 doTERRA Slim Shake
6 Special K
5 Myoplex Lite
4 GNC Lean
3 Shakeology
2 ProGrade
1 Ideal Shape

I'm proud that Shakeology is in the top 3.  In a third-party study, it was stated that Shakeology was limited in the ratings by being a meal-replacement shake, not as a whole health food.  That makes me even more proud to be a member of Team Beach Body!  I'm going to have to do a further study on my own and give a nutritional report along with taste test.

I read many reviews, many ratings and Shakeology was consistently in the top 5, but so were ProGrade and Ideal Shape.  I'd like to take a look at their nutrition and see how they compare beyond meal replacement.
